Analysis - Looking 5 days ahead into the weather models

Analysis provided by UKww member Retron
Here is a summary of the NWP output for noon on Friday.
Issued 0508, 8th March 2010

High pressure will drift westwards later this week, allowing a NW'ly flow to
cover the UK. Into the weekend there are signs of some unsettled weather for
the far north of Scotland but elsewhere it should remain mostly dry.

Analysis and evolution to T+120 via GFS
High pressure covers the UK. Tomorrow there's little change and the same is
true on Wednesday. Thursday sees the high move westwards, introducing
northerlies for England and Wales and SW'lies for northern Scotland.

The jetstream chart shows strong jet heading southwards over the North Sea,
with the UK on the warm side of the jet for once. At the 500hPa level there
are NW'lies with a ridge to the west. ECM also shows NW'lies with a high to
the west. MetO has a NW'ly flow aloft with a high to the west, while JMA has
an upper trough over Scotland and westerlies aloft.
At the surface, GFS brings a ridge and a mixture of NW'lies and northerlies.
ECM brings NW'lies too, with a high to the west. MetO shows NW'lies with a
high to the west as well,  while JMA has a trough over Scotland and WSW'lies
for most.

Evolution to T+168
ECM shows NW'lies on days 6 and 7 as a ridge declines to the west.
GFS brings WNW'lies on day 6 and westerlies on day 7 as high pressure moves
SE'wards to the south.

Looking further afield
ECM shows a SW'ly flow on day 8 as a ridge moves eastwards. Low pressure
lies to the south on day 9, with easterlies, followed by light northerlies
on day 10.
GFS has WSW'lies and westerlies on days 8 to 10, due to low pressure moving
eastwards to the north of the UK.
